Conduct user research to uncover the motivations of users who record their active commutes with Strava. The app is designed for recreational and professional athletes with a high value on harder physical efforts. Commuters are slower and primarily focused on leisure. Both ride bicycles, so how might we provide an engaging experience for shorter recurring bicycle trips?

Problem

Problem

The current flow required multiple steps to set an activity as a commute. Hidden, unclear menus made it hard to find where to set the designation.

Discovery

I started out by sketching the current activity detail page and noting questions that came to mind, as well as potential placement for new components.

I also wanted to explore icon design and how to differentiate it from the existing statistics, but use the same design language when possible.

We wanted to encourage more users to record their commute activities in STRAVA. Longer, harder efforts are rewarded with more social validation (kudos) and we set out to make regular activity recordings just as valuable.

Seeing your continued efforts build over time reinforce the habit of recording. The app never had a way to display carbon dioxide offset as a metric before, an important metric that encourages commuters to continue to record activities.

We knew athletes felt their Activity Feed can get cluttered with shorter commute activities, so we wanted to give athletes the option to hide their commutes from other STRAVA athletes. The idea was that people would record more commutes for themselves, rather than for social gratification.

The problem? The Settings page was already a long list of individual controls. As much as I didn’t want to add another option to the Settings list, we didn’t want the setting nested in Privacy Controls because it might not be an obvious place.

We shipped the new polyline color treatment. It quickly became one of the top three activity treatments. However, we could not combine the color treatment with triggering the commute activity subtype tag. The product team decided that changing this behavior would be confusing, so the two actions remained separate.

Proud moments

Shipping something to the core product mobile app. Even with the small change, it was a good experience working with a larger group of stakeholders.

Commute specific statistics like the C02E offset were later added to product. While we didn't get this when the polyline treatmeant was added, we still had a forward looking view of how to better serve bike commuters on the platform.

Learnings

Too many selections and confusion around privacy and how to make sure activities recorded in Strava end up in the Metro dataset.
